Decisions of the Archbishop in response to Synod Recommendations
On 27 July 2003 in the Cathedral of St Stephen, Archbishop John Bathersby formally promulgated
9 priorities for the Archdiocese. He outlined some of the practical steps to be taken
in their implementation, and committed ongoing resources to the task.

The nine priorities are:
- Embracing the person and vision of Jesus Christ.
- That parishes be welcoming and inclusive communities.
- That Parish Liturgy is the vital experience it should be.
- That Catholics recognise and value the impact of their everyday Christian living
on building a better world.
- Young people are helped by faith development opportunities to
integrate their faith with everyday experience.
- That parish pastoral leadership is promoted, supported and resourced at all
levels.
- The person and message of Jesus and the works of the Church are effectively
communicated in the wider society.
- That parishes accept, value and use the initiative of small groups to nurture
and support people in their faith journey.
- That a deep awareness of, and commitment to, social justice and social welfare are
characteristic of Catholics throughout the Archdiocese.
