| Parishes and deaneries |
The greatest amount of planning for the local Church’s
life and mission is carried out at the parish and deanery levels.
From September 2003 until March 2004, in the light of the Synod
Promulgation, the Commission for Evangelisation and Pastoral
Planning conducted a consultation throughout the Archdiocese
on fourteen proposed measures to support parishes and deaneries
through to 2011. The decisions made by the Archbishop as a result
of that exercise are presented on www.bne.catholic.net.au/synod/decisions.php
.
The key points are:
|
- The basic pastoral cluster of parishes for planning
purposes will be the deanery.
- There will be thirteen geographical deaneries.
- The Archbishop has asked deans to provide leadership in the implementation
of archdiocesan vision and priorities in the parishes of the deanery.
- Each deanery will develop joint initiatives to assist its parishes to
implement the vision and priorities, with support funding available for up to
five years.
- In collaboration with the deanery, each parish and ethnic community will
plan to act upon the Jesus Communion Mission vision and archdiocesan priorities
over the next five years.
- The Archbishop and auxiliary bishops will work with and support deans
and pastors through formation opportunities addressing the impact of new pastoral
strategies.
- Lay pastoral ministry, particularly the position of lay parish pastoral
director, will be promoted and encouraged through policies, formation/training
opportunities, and support structures.
- Each deanery will have a forum (pastoral council or project body), under
the leadership of the dean, to facilitate and plan joint pastoral initiatives
to support its parishes.

Deanery project plans will be located on this website. Pastoral plans
from some parishes will also be on the site.
