| Practical considerations |
There are many factors that influence the success of pastoral planning,
too many to comment on. More information is available in other publications
and in the resources listed below. However, the following factors
are noted here:
- Get it in writing – write down the plans, who, what,
how, where, when etc. However, do not become so absorbed in formulating
plans that there is little energy left for action.
- Focus on people – unless people are involved and make
the plan their own, unless the talents and skills of people are
being drawn forth, and unless leaders are being found and formed
to carry different parts forward, plans will simply become words
on paper and distant memories.
- Smaller and strategic – focus on those things that are
achieveable and have a tangible impact on the group. Success in
one area has an energising effect on the whole and raises our hopes
and aspirations. We tend to overestimate what can be achieved in
one year and underestimate what can be done in five years. Begin
the journey and stick with it.

Conclusion |
Pastoral planning can occur in a variety of ways. What is presented
here is not intended to be a rigid program. Rather, essential elements
in the process of pastoral planning are identified and can be adapted
to suit particular circumstances.
