St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland will provide emergency support to those affected by the widespread destruction brought by Cyclone Larry to parts of the state's far north.

According to emergency services there are approximately 100 people that remain in emergency shelters as the clean-up operation begins in Innisfail and other hard-hit communities.

Mr John Campbell, State President of St Vincent de Paul Society said: We have not been able to access the worst hit areas at this point in time, but as soon as emergency services clear the way we will be providing food, water, blankets and shelter to those in need.

“We have spoken with a local member of the Society in Innisfail who says currently there is a need for food in the short term so local Vinnies members are assisting with the distribution of this until we organise a coordinated effort.

“Our key concern is the long term issues that will arise from this situation, many have been left homeless and will now need to rebuild their lives, Vinnies will be there to support them and offer material and financial assistance,” said Mr Campbell.

The St Vincent de Paul Society is locally run in communities throughout the state and offers crisis assistance, emergency relief and accommodation.
