Come Holy SpiritThe Church we are

  • We are members of the Roman Catholic Church, a universal communion of local churches that recognize the primacy of the Bishop of Rome.

  • We are people of God in south-east Queensland – more than 600,000 Catholics in the fastest-growing region in Australia stretching from Coolangatta in the south to Maryborough in the north and west to Gatton and Gayndah.

  • We are led by Archbishop John Bathersby, with the assistance of auxiliary bishops Brian V Finnigan and Joseph Oudeman OFMCap. The Archbishop’s Jesus Communion Mission vision commits us to be an evangelising diocese.

  • We are part of an incredible story of faith that began with the first pioneers who established a mission to Aborigines on Stradbroke Island in 1843.

  • We gather in Eucharistic communities to celebrate God’s love and action in our lives.

  • We seek to educate our young people in the faith through our 150 Catholic primary and secondary schools as well as through the work of religious faith educators in state schools.

  • Groups and organizations throughout the Archdiocese offer a rich variety of spiritual development and renew opportunities.

  • We are a people who recognise and celebrate our cultural diversity and seek to build welcoming, inclusive communities of faith.

  • We respond to social needs, especially the poor, and address social justice issues via a wide range of welfare, healthcare and aged care services, archdiocesan bodies, parish initiatives and many voluntary organisations.

  • We build communion with other Christian Churches and relationships with other world religions through ongoing ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and action in a spirit of mutual understanding and respect.

  • We are a people who through baptism are committed to promote God’s reign within our families, workplaces and society.

  • We value the enormous contributions of clergy and religious women and men whose lives of service have contributed to the effectiveness of our pastoral ministries.

  • We are committed to the nine priorities of Synod 2003 promulgated by Archbishop Bathersby on 27 July 2003
